World Champion Jenson Button is yet to win a Grand Prix since crossing the line first for victory in Turkey last year, Round 7 of the 2009 World Championship. Having switched from Brawn GP to McLaren for 2010, the Englishman has stressed the importance to a strong start.
In the ten seasons between 2000 and 2009, only twice did the winner of the first race not go on to claim the title; with that particular fact in mind, all likely title contenders know that championships can easily be lost in the opening races of a season.
"I think for any championship, for any Champion, it's important to be quick out of the blocks," Jenson said in Thursday's press conference at Sakhir. "If you look back, normally the guy that really fights for the championship and gets the championship is strong from the word 'go'; so yes, I think it is important for all of us to be up there at the front here in Bahrain."
Button is also convinced that, for any onlooker, F1 2010 contains all the ingredients for a fascinating spectacle.
"The competition is very fierce, I must say, but that's why it's exciting," the Frome man continued. "For a fan of Formula 1, this season should be electric, it really should be - if it's not, we're doing something seriously wrong! I don't think there have been so many competitive drivers in competitive cars for a long time, so it's great to see."
