Norbert Haug is sure that Red Bull and Ferrari will be near the top of the timesheets over the rest of the weekend in Bahrain after the two teams finished lower down than expected on Friday. Mercedes enjoyed a strong start to the season, however, with four cars carrying its engines locking out the first four positions.
With Nico Rosberg's Mercedes works car leading the way on a best effort of 1:55.409, Lewis Hamilton was the leading McLaren in second ahead of respective team-mates Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button.
"We prepared ourselves mainly for the race setup but the strategies of the others can only be predicted," the Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport told Germany's Sky Sports. "The day went well and we hope to continue working in the right direction tomorrow."
With Massa and Alonso's Ferraris 7th and 9th with the Red Bull cars of Vettel and Webber 5th and 17th, with the Australian having been stuck in the pits with a drive shaft problem, Haug remains calm. "It's clear that McLaren is strong," the German continued. "Red Bull and Ferrari might not show it yet but you know they will be there tomorrow."
Having attempted to sign up Michael Schumacher at Mercedes' main team - then McLaren - no less than three times over the past 15 years, Haug was pleased with the quality of the 7-time World Champion. "You can't expect Michael to be on pole after being gone for three years but we work hard and do the best we can," Haug concluded.
