New engines for both Ferrari cars

14 March 2010

With the Ferrari team having confirmed on Sunday morning that Felipe Massa's engine would be changed ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Maranello squad has now revealed that team-mate Fernando Alonso has also received a new powerplant ahead of the season-opening race this afternoon.

With Massa and Alonso second and third on the grid behind the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel, the red team hopes to begin strongly this year after 2009 featured its worst start to a season since the early 1980s.

With both the Brazilian and Spaniard prepared to make best use of fresh units, neither man will be penalised in accordance with the technical rule first introduced for last year which states that all drivers are able to use 8 engines over the course of a season.

Use of a ninth will result in a 10-place grid drop for the race in question and the introduction of a tenth on the same weekend would cause a 10-place penalty for the following Grand Prix as well.

'We will change the engine on Alonso's car for the same precautionary measure which determined the previous decision,' reads a message on Ferrari's official Twitter feed.

The 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix begins at 3pm local time (GMT +3) and can be followed via the GPUpdate.net live report
