Although it may have seemed as though the highly public 'Crashgate' race-fixing scandal of last year had long since come to a close, it has now been revealed that the Piquet family is taking legal action against former Renault F1 Team Manager Flavio Briatore for fake claims which were made through a team statement.
With all members involved in the controversy of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix having since departed Formula 1 in their separate ways, The Independent reports that Nelson Piquets Sr. and Jr. are suing Italian Briatore through British courts for a sum of £200,000.
The reason for the action is a press release which was sent out by the Enstone-based team during Briatore's management of the outfit, stating that false evidence had been presented by the Brazilians.
"Given Renault F1's failure to accept the Piquets' invitation to withdraw the allegations and apologise, they feel they have no other choice," explained lawyer Dominic Crossley, who will be dealing with the alleged case of libel.
