Fauzy: I could race this year

2 April 2010

Fairuz Fauzy has revealed that he could be making his Formula 1 debut for Lotus this year, having taken part in the first free practice session at Sepang on Friday morning.

With Force India running Paul di Resta for the second consecutive Friday Free Practice 1, Lotus became the second team to place its test driver in the cockpit as Fauzy replaced Heikki Kovalainen on his way to 22nd place with a best lap time of 1:40.721, 1.3 seconds down on team-mate Jarno Trulli.

"It went well, I had a great experience," Fauzy told the BBC. "It was a very special experience for me but at the end of the session I had a problem and couldn't go quicker."

Fauzy also mentioned that Lotus F1 Team Principal Tony Fernandes may place him in the car for a Grand Prix this season. "Tony mentioned that I might be driving in one of the races this year so we'll see how it goes - I think it would be great," 27-year-old Fairuz added.
