Asmer career is over, says father

Asmer career is over, says father

8 April 2010

Toivo Asmer, father of former BMW Formula 1 test driver Marko, has admitted that his son's motorsport career appears to have come to an end due to a lack of funding. The Estonian driver, now 25, clinched the British Formula 3 crown in 2007 before moving onto BMW Sauber as test driver the following season.

Born in Estonian capital city Tallinn in 1984, Asmer made his competitive racing debut in British Formula Ford in 2003 before competing in the prestigious Macau and Masters Formula 3 races a year later. After also making his British F3 debut, Asmer went on to pick up the title with Hitech in 2007.

"The honest answer is that Marko's career is over," Toivo told Estonian newspaper Delfi Sport. "The situation is not pretty and the matter is purely about money, which is still extremely important.

"The most painful blow was when we left Sauber - that was very much the beginning of the end."

Toivo is set to fly to England before the end of this week in order to establish 'new goals'. "I hope we won't have to rule Marko out in terms of returning to the top of the sport," he continued, "but at the moment the situation is set to take up the whole season."
