Having finished the day at the top of the Albert Park timesheets, Hamilton performed a burnout in front of race fans on roads open to the public in his Mercedes hire car.

With the incident having been witnessed by police, it was an embarrassed Hamilton whose episode was broadcast across the globe after the aftermath was captured on camera.

It has now been confirmed that the McLaren driver has received charges for the moment, with his team having already covered costs after the car was impounded.

A court hearing at the Magistrates' Court of Victoria has been confirmed for Tuesday 24 August although whether Hamilton will need to attend in person remains unknown.
