Virgin Racing has confirmed that a brake problem was the reason for Lucas di Grassi's stoppage during Montreal's first free practice session on Friday morning. The early woes signalled the start to a generally bad day for the Sheffield-based squad, which finished 23rd and 24th on the timesheets.
Virgin was unable to make any impression on Friday, with Hispania Racing also able to finish ahead of the pair of black and red cars in both sessions, with di Grassi having failed to set any lap time in the first after first being stranded in the garage and then pulling off the track at Turn 6 as soon as he rejoined the action.
"It was a tough day for me today because it's my first time racing in Canada and we didn't get the best start to the weekend," the Brazilian explained.
"I didn't run in the first free practice because we had an assembly issue with the brakes on the front-left. In the second session, I was trying to improve the car but we have a long way to go before we arrive at the best setup."
"We had an unfortunate assembly error today that caused Lucas to stop on circuit and sit out P1, which was very frustrating for him and the team," Technical Director Nick Wirth added. "The track was incredibly dirty to start with and that didn't suit the low-downforce package that we brought here.
"Nevertheless, we did some key tests specifically for the race, so now we'll do our usual Friday night analysis and I'm sure we'll have a stronger Saturday."
