Bridgestone, Formula 1's sole tyre provider until the end of this season, has revealed which Slick tyre compounds will be on offer up to and including the Singapore Grand Prix. In a normal dry race, drivers are required to use both types over the course of a race distance.
Since 2007, each driver has been forced to use both the harder and softer tyre types available for a Grand Prix, with the softer (known by teams as Option) being distinguished from the harder (Prime) by carrying a green-painted sidewall.
The difference between the two compounds was a key element to the excitement levels in the recent Canadian Grand Prix, as teams struggled to find the correct balance between the less grippy but more durable harder tyre and stickier but short-lived softer type.
A notable part of Bridgestone's Monday press release is that the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim will feature, for the very first time, the greatest possible difference in grip levels as the Super Soft and Hard compounds are used in the same race.
"This will give us very good data for evaluation and will be interesting for those who have called for a bigger difference between the allocated tyres," commented Hirohide Hamashima, Bridgestone's Head of Motorsport Tyre Development.
