Liuzzi revitalised by Canadian performance

23 June 2010

Vitantonio Liuzzi has explained that he is now refreshed after enduring a series of difficult races before the Canadian Grand Prix. Having scored points in both Bahrain and Australia at the start of the season, the Italian has since suffered from a mixture of problems before enjoying an impressive weekend in Montreal.

Although ninth place was clinched in Monaco, Liuzzi had previously retired from three consecutive races in Malaysia, China and Spain before coming home in a frustrated 13th at Istanbul Park whilst competing with a chassis which carried flaws.

With the Turkish monocoque changed for Canada, though, the Italian flew to a career-best grid spot of sixth – which became fifth on Sunday morning following the grid penalty of Mark Webber – before finishing ninth, despite having to make an extra pit-stop after being hit by Felipe Massa’s Ferrari in the first two corners.

“I feel that Canada was another start for me and, for sure, I will be pushing like crazy to keep that level of performance going,” the Pescara driver began. “I will stick with the chassis I used in Canada from now on because it is working well in the corners.

“I have always believed that we had the potential to finish in the points, I have always believed in myself and the team has really supported me, so it's not like we've done anything new - we've just really focussed on getting the whole package together.”

Set to drive on the Valencia street circuit for the first time this weekend, Tonio now aims to keep in touch with Renault and the factory Mercedes outfit.

“The team also did very well there with Adrian and Giancarlo (Fisichella), finishing in the top twelve, and it was really where we started being closer to the points,” Liuzzi continued, referring to last year’s European Grand Prix.

“I know it will be tough but we were mixing it with Mercedes and Renault in Canada and, with our new upgrades to the front and the rear of the car, I'm pretty hopeful we can repeat our performance of Montreal - hopefully without the first lap accident this time!”
