Felipe Massa is confident that he still holds a possibility of picking up his first drivers’ crown this season, despite several Formula 1 insiders having casted doubts over the Brazilian’s chances. The Ferrari driver lies eighth in the championship table and 42 points off leader Lewis Hamilton following the Canadian Grand Prix.
After finishing on the podium at the first two races this year, Massa led the standings after Round 3 in Malaysia but has since struggled to keep on top of team-mate Fernando Alonso’s performances, with the Spaniard currently sitting fourth overall.
However, when asked if the title is still a reasonable target for 2010, Massa’s response was very much in the affirmative.
“Yes, definitely,” said the 2008 runner-up who, until Montreal, has scored points in every Grand Prix so far this season.
“I feel that, until it’s not possible from a mathematical point of view and you know that you don’t have a chance anymore, the championship is open, definitely.
“We’ve seen that many things have changed in two races and things can also change very quickly in another two races.”
