Horner excited about ‘fascinating’ movable wings

25 June 2010

Christian Horner is confident that moveable rear wings, electronically-operated and permitted in Formula 1 from next season onwards, will spice up racing as drivers are able to push a button and enjoy a straight-line speed advantage to aid passing.

The system will allow drivers to adjust their rear wing once two laps into the race and whenever running one second or less behind the car in front – something Horner is confident will be a source for much excitement.

“I think it’s going to be fascinating because it should make it easier,” the Red Bull Team Principal told the BBC, referring to overtaking.

“It’s going to be very, very valuable in terms of spectacle. It might even be an advantage to be the car behind going into that last lap, so it could be spectacular.”

Christian is also sure that F1 commercial rights holder Formula One Management (FOM) will be able to provide a method to ensure that television viewers know when drivers are using the new system.

“I’m sure Bernie (Ecclestone) and his guys can come up with some graphics to see when a driver’s using his wing, so for sure it’s going to make life really interesting,” he concluded.
