Davidson: Ask drivers to suggest new features

25 June 2010

Anthony Davidson has hit out at Formula 1’s teams and sporting governing body the FIA, claiming that the drivers should have more of a say when it comes to introducing new car features such as the moveable rear wing device of 2011.

At present, electronically-operated rear wings are set to help drivers overtake next season, as confirmed by the FIA in a Wednesday statement. However, BBC Radio 5 live commentator and Peugeot Le Mans racer Davidson believes that it is the drivers’ opinions which should be valued more, after several criticised the modernism in Valencia on Thursday.

“Only a couple of drivers in the world ever get to drive these cars,” the Hemel Hempstead man said during Friday’s first free practice session in Spain.

“To not even ask their opinion is crazy to me. It’s like (celebrity chef) Gordon Ramsey going round to your restaurant to get a better opinion of your restaurant – why don’t you ask them?!

“To be honest, I’d be surprised if the rear wing gets through at all; it’s like the 18 inch wheels that didn’t get put through either. I think teams just like to see what people like us think about it before it actually gets put forward.”
