Heikki Kovalainen’s 19th place on the final Friday timesheets may not have been an obvious source of excitement in Valencia although the Finn’s achievement was somewhat remarkable within the team considering the Finn only arrived in the city at 5am on Friday following a 1,000-kilometre drive from Geneva, Switzerland.
With French air traffic control strikes having forced the cancellation of Heikki’s flight, he and English partner Catherine Hyde took turns to drive for over ten hours before reaching Valencia in the early hours.
“I feel really good,” he said, pleased with his best lap time of 1:42.467 – the quickest of Formula 1’s three new teams and a second down on Jaime Alguersuari’s Toro Rosso.
“It’s been an excellent Friday. We’ve made really good progress with the car, every setup change we made seemed to be pushing us in the right direction and in the end the tyres seemed to be working well over the long run.
“I did arrive late today because of the French strikes - we had to drive down from Geneva and arrived early this morning. But I feel fine - it’s just one night with a little less sleep than usual, so it’s no big deal.”
