Fernando Alonso would rather wait until Saturday before evaluating Ferrari’s updated car parts in Valencia. The Spaniard finished as the quickest runner in second practice but stresses that P1 on Friday does not guarantee pole position.
With the Oviedo man having led the way in his home nation, Alonso’s best lap time was just half a second up on leading Red Bull representative Sebastian Vettel.
“Sometimes we've been very quick on a Friday but we were first here last year then only eighth on Saturday,” he explained to reporters in the paddock. “This is just free practice.
“We’ve tested some components on the car and then we’ll see tomorrow. Yes, the car was good today, but it was good also in Canada (where he finished third).”
Team-mate Felipe Massa remains upbeat, meantime, despite spinning at Turn 5 in the afternoon and losing setup fine-tuning time as his car was recovered to the pits.
“I am quite convinced that we have improved but it's very difficult to say,” the Paulista admitted. “What I can say is that the car is competitive and that I’m happy today. It's important to fight strongly, so I hope we can be strong tomorrow.”
