Christian Klien had hoped for more than 14 laps although the Austrian was helpless to avoid a distinctly short practice session with HRT as he substituted for Karun Chandhok on Friday morning in Valencia.
Former Jaguar and Red Bull racer Klien first made an Hispania appearance in Barcelona last month although the team’s first Valencia session proved particularly trying on Friday.
At its home event, the shared HRT car of Klien and Chandhok suffered from gearbox issues as team-mate Bruno Senna was forced to pit with a driveshaft problem.
“It was a new circuit for me and in the first laps I had to learn the track, which was very dusty in the beginning,” Christian reported, “but the conditions got better and I could improve my lap times.
“In the end, it is disappointing as I only could do 14 laps in my second session for Hispania Racing. We had a gearbox problem on the car and that’s why I had to stop before the end of the session.”
