European Grand Prix pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel admits that he knew a rapid final lap was necessary in Valencia after compromising his penultimate run on Saturday. The grid-leading German also believes that using the f-duct device for the first time since Barcelona is not making a huge performance difference.
Vettel’s fourth pole of 2010 is his first since China, with the two Red Bulls separated by just 75 thousandths of a second.
“It’s good,” Sebastian said in the post-qualifying press conference. “Obviously in the last couple of races we didn’t have a very smooth run but it’s good; both types of circuits, Canada and Valencia, usually shouldn’t be our strongest but it’s good to put the car on pole and it’s looking good.
“I had two runs. On the first run, I had a use moment in the first sector, so I knew I had to put in a good second one, so it worked.”
Thanking his mechanics, who have suffered from a recent lack of sleep, Vettel added that he is sure McLaren is making the most of the rear wing-stalling f-duct. “It isn’t that big probably but you feel the difference,” he said of his own blown rear wing. “I think these guys (McLaren) are using it to the optimum.”
