Hamilton ‘really happy’ despite mistake

26 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton expressed his joy in the post-qualifying press conference on Saturday after confirmed the third-best grid slot despite a large mistake on his final qualifying lap. The championship leader will set off from behind a Red Bull 1-2.

Heading for a possible front row grid place in Spain, Hamilton’s error came as he placed his McLaren's left-rear wheel on the painted and slippery white line at the turn-in point to the Turn 12-13 chicane. Despite the faux pas, Lewis remains content.

“I tell you what, I’m really happy to be here,” he said. “We knew that everyone else would be bringing updates and we saw from practice that we were quite a long way behind. We were a little bit cautious but didn’t realise that we’d be so far up.

“I lost it into Turn 12, locked up the rears. I thought, ‘Gees, for sure I’m gonna drop back quite far back here’…so I’m quite happy.

“Definitely it’s going to be an interesting race tomorrow but, yes, I think anything’s possible from there (3rd). I think we’re in a good position to start, I can’t complain about where we’re starting from. The first corner and first few laps are going to be crucial but we’ll just be pushing as hard as we can to win it.”
