Button ruing last-corner error

26 June 2010

Not one, but two McLarens made errors on their last laps as Valencia Grand Prix qualifying came to a close on Saturday afternoon. Crossed up at Turn 12, Lewis Hamilton was lucky to stay third although team-mate and reigning Champion Jenson Button dropped to seventh after running wide at the final corner, Turn 25.

Set for a possible second row grid slot alongside Hamilton, Button had been pleased with his last-corner performances so far this weekend…

“Really good until the last corner but I locked up, went wide, lost a couple of tenths…so that’s really disappointing,” Jenson explained to the BBC.

“I’m really disappointed to be down there because it was looking reasonably good until the last corner.

“Compared to the Red Bulls, we’re a lot slower in the last sector. Compared to Lewis, it’s certain corners, but we’re running different downforce levels.

“The last corner has been good for me all weekend until qualifying – I pushed a little too hard there. I’m now down in seventh, so hopefully at the start I’ll make up a few places from there - otherwise it’s the pit-stops.”
