It seemed as though Sauber’s fortunes may have finally been on the up when Kamui Kobayashi enjoyed a points finish in Turkey although the Japanese driver has since been eliminated in Q1 qualifying in both Montreal and now Valencia.
With Formula 1’s three new teams having been on the sidelines - as expected – at the earliest possible point, Kobayashi appeared powerless to avoid his eventual fate.
“I am very disappointed after having been out so early in qualifying,” he said. “My first run on the Prime (harder) tyres was okay and when we changed to the Option (softer) tyres I was expecting a lot more from them for the second run, but there was no extra grip.
“Anyway, I didn’t exploit the potential because on my first flying lap with the softer tyres I locked the front wheels, which resulted in them being flat spotted - that’s why I felt vibrations in the car and this ruined my second flying lap. It’s a shame.”
On the other hand, team-mate Pedro de la Rosa was pleased with his Q2 performance, which sees him start 16th on the grid for the second Grand Prix in Spain this season.
“16th doesn’t look great but I must say I am quite happy with what we did in qualifying,” the Barcelona man commented. “In Q1, especially, our performance was really good. We improved the car after free practice and the changes paid off.”
