For the first time this season, both Williams achieved Q3 qualifying positions in Valencia as Nico Hülkenberg and Rubens Barrichello managed eighth and ninth places on the grid ahead of Sunday’s European Grand Prix.
Following on from problems earlier this season, such as two heavy crashes in Monte-Carlo, Williams enjoyed a much more positive day on the Spanish street circuit as the reigning GP2 Champion – who was beaten by his team-mate by just four thousandths of a second on Montreal’s Saturday – set an identical lap time (down to the thousandth) today.
“A positive Saturday, that wasn’t a bad qualifying!” said German Nico, who starts ahead of Barrichello by virtue of setting his time first.
“No-one expected me to be ahead of Rubens today because he’s been quicker than me all weekend – somehow, I pulled out a good lap in Q3 and beat him by a fraction. We’re obviously happy that we have both cars in the top ten, which was the aim. Hopefully we’ll have a good race and get some points tomorrow.”
“It was a good qualifying session for the team,” added the Paulista, who had also ended final practice in the top ten. “Ninth is a strong position to be starting from but I could have done better than that if it weren’t for a problem with brake warm-up in Q3.”
