Whitmarsh: A realisation that rivals are quick

27 June 2010

Martin Whitmarsh insists that McLaren is taking nothing for granted following the Woking team’s pair of superb 1-2 finishes in Turkey and Canada. There was a day of mixed emotions in Valencia on Saturday, though, as both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button made last-lap qualifying errors.

With McLaren leading the Constructors’ Championship as Hamilton and Button sit atop the drivers’ standings, the English squad hope to retain their advantage this weekend although they line up behind an all-Red Bull Racing front row in Spain.

However, McLaren’s cause was not helped by unforced errors at Turns 12 and 25, respectively.

“Well I think both drivers did a great job through qualifying but they both made mistakes on the last lap,” team Principal Whitmarsh told the BBC.

“Probably Lewis could have been quicker than that but third is probably where we ought to be anyway. Jenson’s mistake - that probably cost us a fourth place, so that’s a shame

“I think we’ve been on a high, obviously with two back-to-back 1-2s. We’ve come here and suddenly there’s the realisation that other teams are quite quick.”
