Alonso slams ‘manipulated’ race

27 June 2010

It was a furious Fernando Alonso who spoke to Spanish and Catalan television stations following a highly frustrating European Grand Prix on Sunday. The Ferrari driver, who finished ninth, claims that stewards were biased towards Lewis Hamilton and McLaren.

The frustration stems back to Lap 10, as the Safety Car was deployed following the massive accident between Mark Webber and Heikki Kovalainen. With Hamilton having hesitated when seeing the silver Mercedes make its way onto the track, the Englishman passed the car driven by Bernd Mayländer and was handed a drive-through penalty for doing so.

However, Alonso – who, like team-mate Felipe Massa, was held up as the McLaren eased off – claims that the FIA stewards (one of which is former driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen) ‘manipulated’ the result.

“This is a shame for the fans – they have come here and seen a manipulated race,” he commented in the paddock, having been passed by Kamui Kobayashi on the penultimate lap.

“When the Safety Car came out, Hamilton overtook it - something I have never seen before…overtaking the medical car and with yellow flags out…we were no more than a metre away from each other at that point but he finished second and I finished ninth.”

Alonso added that Hamilton should have finished eighth, as he also would have been following the Safety Car had he not overtaken it. “Everything is going against us at the moment and it seems as though the stewards are allowing all sorts of things,” Fernando angrily concluded.
