Hamilton: I thought I had passed the Safety Car

27 June 2010

Lewis Hamilton leads the championship heading into his home race at Silverstone although the 2008 World Champion, who finished second in Valencia on Sunday, is the subject of much debate involving the Safety Car, race stewards and ex team-mate Fernando Alonso following the race.

On Lap 10, Hamilton could be seen seemingly overtaking the Safety Car as it was deployed for the enormous Mark Webber accident. With Lewis having gone on to finish second but Ferrari’s Alonso ninth after running directly behind the McLaren in the opening stages, the Spaniard heavily criticised both the Stevenage man and FIA race stewards.

“I don't really know,” Hamilton replied when asked to give his version of events. “As I was coming around Turn 1 I saw the Safety Car line - I then saw that the Safety Car was alongside me and thought I had passed it, so I continued and that was it.”

Delighted to head the standings before he heads home to England, Hamilton also shared his version of events regarding the Turn 2 touch with eventual winner Sebastian Vettel on the first lap.

“I was halfway down the inside,” he explained. “He gave me room but we touched and broke my front wing; I came in (when the Safety Car was out) and the team did a great job to change the wing and tyres – after that my pace was much stronger.”
