Mark Webber walked away unaided from his terrifying accident in Valencia but admits that he was taken aback to see how early Heikki Kovalainen’s Lotus applied the brakes at Turn 12. The accident was similar to that which injured GP2 driver Josef Kral earlier in the day.
Having fallen from second to ninth on the first lap, Webber pitted for new tyres but lost time due to a sticking wheel on Lap 7. Two tours later, the Australian found himself flying into the corner inverted before slamming into the tyre barriers the right way up.
“Well, it always takes two to tango, doesn't it?” Mark explained to the BBC after the race. “There's two of us in this incident. I've driven slow cars and have been at the back but how long is that going to last for? It's going to last another fifteen seconds, so is it worth it (defending)?
“I was looking for the best tow, get the job done and pass him, and he was playing quite hard, blocking all of a sudden, very aggressively. In the end the thing that surprised me was how early he braked, that's the thing which caught me out; it didn't matter where I was or how close to the tow, I still had everything under control.
“It was a nasty incident.”
