After producing a dazzling performance to finish eighth and collect four points last time out in Canada, Sébastien Buemi was less enthusiastic with his repeat performance in Spain on Sunday. Although the Swiss driver allowed Toro Rosso to move into double points figures, he now ponders ‘what might have been’ in the European Grand Prix.
After starting 11th, Buemi moved up into tenth during the opening laps but believes that more could have been extracted from the Lap 9 Safety Car situation, as Sébastien’s progress was slowed by a near coming together with Nico Hülkenberg’s Williams in the pit lane – both drivers have since been cleared over the incident.
“This was not a very good race, as I could have finished sixth, but I made two mistakes which have cost us four points,” he explained, with the team originally known as Minardi having lost points to Williams this weekend in the battle for seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship.
“I am happy to be in the points but disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity to do better.
“As for losing seventh place, I knew Kobayashi was closing very quickly on new tyres and on the penultimate lap I was locking my front tyres a lot; but at the final corner (of the last lap) I didn’t think he could brake that late and so I am unhappy that I made the mistake and let him past.”
