GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Jenson Button

28 June 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

Button headed into the campaign as reigning Champion but surprised all during the off-season by switching to McLaren and joining fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton - a brave move in most people’s books and one which many feared could prove to be dreadfully wrong, although arguably the Frome man was presented with no option as Brawn GP were believed to be offering a smaller salary than expected.

So, nine races in and Jenson lies second in the championship after leading it for just under a month between Shanghai and Monte-Carlo. He was also the first driver to win, not one, but two races for McLaren by taking advantage of adverse weather conditions in both Australia and China, judging his strategy to perfection on both occasions.

It could be argued that, had it not been for the rain in Melbourne and Shanghai, the World Champ would be some way down the overall order, although his other podium results in Istanbul, Montreal and Valencia very much suggest otherwise.
