Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo has backed up comments from driver Fernando Alonso and Team Principal Stefano Domenicali by placing the spotlight on Formula 1’s overall integrity following Sunday’s European Grand Prix.
Although Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren and both Ferraris were no more than unlucky to have already passed the pit entrance when the Safety Car was deployed, Ferrari is complaining about the Englishman overtaking the Mercedes-Benz sports car and his ensuing drive-through penalty, which they feel does not suit the crime.

“The result of yesterday’s race was misrepresentative,” di Montezemolo says in a Monday statement, which labels the incident as having happened ‘in the cold light of day’. “Ferrari, which showed itself to be competitive in the European Grand Prix, paid a price that was too high for respecting the rules.
“Meanwhile those who didn’t follow the rules were penalised by the race officials in a way that was less severe than the damage suffered by those who did respect them. That is a very serious and unacceptable event that creates dangerous precedents, throwing a shadow over the credibility of Formula 1.
“We are sure that the FIA will fully analyse what happened, taking the consequent necessary decisions. Ferrari will watch this with interest.”
