GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Mark Webber

29 June 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

Some believed this could be Webber’s last season with Red Bull, with a selection of younger drivers – such as Toro Rosso man Sébastien Buemi – waiting in the wings. However, the Australian had already signed a 1-year deal for 2011 before the Spanish Grand Prix, a race which Mark won convincingly from pole position.

Firmly behind his team-mate in the flyaway races and leaving the door open at Malaysia’s first corner, it looked as though Webber would remain in the Sebastian Vettel shadow which was cast over him last year and, clearly, Red Bull as a company still favours the German – not least because of the German language connection for advertising and promotional activities.

However, Webber’s crushing defeats of the opposition in both Barcelona and Monte-Carlo (plus three consecutive pole positions) came as a realisation for Vettel and it seems fair that the duo have both enjoyed a couple of race victories in the first half of the year. If it does come down to an all-Red Bull fight in 2010, it’s likely to depend on who is the better man on the day.

He was the only man to have scored at every race this season until the European Grand Prix but returning to strong form as soon as possible at Silverstone will be key for Mark, to get back in front of Vettel and confirm that his massive Valencia shunt has not upset his mental approach when it comes to challenging for the title.
