Michael advises Safety Car rule ‘review’

29 June 2010

Sam Michael believes that Safety Car rules should be looked at amongst teams in order to avoid a repeat performance of the confusion and controversy which was seen in the European Grand Prix on Sunday. Nine drivers were given 5-second penalties after being judged to have driven into the pit lane too quickly.

Although the perplexities which surrounded the Safety Car finish of the Monaco Grand Prix have now been cast aside courtesy of a rule clarification from Formula 1 governing body the FIA, more issues were brought up last weekend as Lewis Hamilton’s drive-through penalty for narrowly passing the Safety Car sparked rage at Ferrari.

Apart from this, nine other drivers were all handed post-race penalties of 5 seconds for driving too quickly as the Safety Car was deployed.

To keep speeds down, rules state that competitors must not return to the second Safety Car line - under Safety Car conditions – before a timer located on the steering wheel has reached zero seconds.

“In this regard the regulations probably need a review, rather than clarifying,” said Williams F1 Technical Director Michael. “From a personal perspective, I was in favour of the old system when you could duck and dive into the pits under the Safety Car in order to win advantage, but I also appreciate that the current rules are there to promote safety.”
