GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Timo Glock

29 June 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

It’s certainly been a different kind of season for Timo so far, hasn’t it? After two years with Japanese car giant Toyota, the German made the switch to Sheffield-based newcomers Manor GP for 2010, with the John Booth-run squad soon being renamed Virgin Racing as Sir Richard Branson came on-board.

Nick Wirth’s CFD design technique was tipped as either ingenious or disastrous before the campaign began, depending on your point of view; whatever it is, it’s no secret that pieces have been seen falling off the red and black cars on various occasions, sparking a particular outburst from Glock by firmly stating that general performances must start improving…and quickly.

Often seen with a smile on his face in the paddock, Timo has simply been unable to make an impression on-track and retiring from two thirds of the races so far certainly hasn’t help his cause.

All that can be done at the moment is to ensure that rookie team-mate and ex GP2 title rival Lucas di Grassi remains behind whilst not running into anything on the way. However, you can’t helping feeling that the thought Glock could have signed with Renault for this year must return to his mind every time a technical problem occurs…
