GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Bruno Senna

2 July 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

The Brazilian entered F1 this season with the ever-present tag of ‘Bruno Senna, nephew of Ayrton’ alongside his name in the same way the 1996 title winner joined the sport with the label ‘Damon Hill, Son of Graham’ attached to his.

Unsurprisingly, the Hispania driver is quizzed about his late, great uncle every race weekend but insists that this is more a joy than a burden as, without the ever-popular triple World Champion, Bruno certainly wouldn’t be where he is today.

But how do you approach your maiden F1 season, as relative of many people’s all-time greatest hero, knowing that your car won’t turn a wheel until the first race weekend? With difficultly, is the answer to that, although both Bruno and Karun Chandhok have got on with their jobs in a highly respectable way. It didn’t begin easily – BBC TV commentator Jonathan Legard confirmed that by noting how Senna’s car finished Bahrain sounding ‘like a lawn mower’…it was true, and things could only improve.

On paper, Senna has out-qualified Chandhok 7-2, so no problems there. All he can really do now is to continue out-pacing his fellow debutant team-mate and keep it on the island in order to allow rookies HRT to collect as much track data as possible.

Senna might not have the car at the present moment although he does have the name but, to quote Jonathan again, will it be enough?
