Signing Kobayashi has paid off, says Sauber

1 July 2010

Peter Sauber is both pleased and sure that employing Kamui Kobayashi was the right move for 2010. Although critics have written the Japanese driver off early this season, despite his dazzling performances in the final two Grands Prix of 2009, the Team Principal is generally delighted with his work so far.

Even though Kobayashi has been a victim of car unreliability this year, the former Toyota man has also been involved in several unforced on-track incidents, not least his trip into the Wall of Champions on Lap 1 of the Canadian Grand Prix.

However, after scoring points in both Istanbul and Valencia – with the second featuring a 40-lap defence from the reigning World Champion plus a thrilling pass on a former double title winner – the Swiss businessman is positive that the right decision was made pre-season.

“Signing a rookie is always something of a risk,” he said, echoing his sentiments from the aftermath of the Canadian Grand Prix. “On Sunday Kamui delivered confirmation that we made the right decision. Those kinds of lap times are only possible if both the driver and the car are quick; there's no other way.

“The C29 has a huge amount of potential but it doesn't make it easy for our engineers and drivers to fully exploit this potential every time. When I compare our qualifying performance in Valencia with the lap times in the race, I can't work it out.”
