Local spectators and television viewers of Sunday’s European Grand Prix will have seen a glass beer bottle rolling its way across the race track on Lap 27. However, race organisers remain ensure as to how the receptacle found its way onto the circuit.
Following Lewis Hamilton’s overtake on the Safety Car and Fernando Alonso’s subsequent anger, some believed the vessel to have been thrown onto the track by an irritated Spanish race fan. However, with Turn 16 located several hundred metres from the nearest T20 grandstand, Jorge Martínez remains puzzled.
“We’re not sure how it got there,” explained former motorcycle racer ‘Aspar’, head of race promoter Valmor Sport. “If somebody had thrown it there, it would have broken. It’s certainly something which should be avoided but it can happen anywhere.”
A bottle was last thrown onto a Formula 1 track when furious spectators protested at the controversial 6-car American Grand Prix of 2005.
Furthermore, Martínez added that organisers in Valencia are now considering small circuit changes in order to spice up the action on what is generally considered to be a bland venue, when it comes to passing action. “We’re looking into a series of small changes at some parts of the track, three in particular, to see if they can bring us more overtaking,” he revealed.
