Parliamentary figures and the general public alike were stunned on Friday morning as Mark Webber and Red Bull Racing shot into heart of British capital city London in order to perform a 3.2-second pit-stop directly outside the Houses of Parliament.
It was an early start for the Milton Keynes team, servicing the Australian’s show car as Big Ben struck 6am, ahead of next weekend’s British Grand Prix at a revised Silverstone.
“Obviously, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Webber smiled in Parliament Square. “It’s not every day you get to see the sights of London from an F1 car. This year has once again thrown up some interesting rule changes so any practice the team can get is going to make a difference, no matter where it is.”
Jonathan Wheatley was also amused by the reactions of onlookers. “As a team, we practice and perform pit-stops in all sorts of conditions around the world but this has been a really unique experience - one I imagine won’t be repeated,” the Team Manager commented.
“We’ve only got a week to go before Silverstone, so what better way to practice under pressure than outside the Houses of Parliament.”
However, a Conservative approach should not be expected in Northamptonshire next weekend…
