GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Pedro de la Rosa

4 July 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

Poor Pedro. That sounds sarcastic, perhaps, but it really has been a trying and, in a way, sad start to the season for de la Rosa. The Catalan made a great F1 debut with Arrows by scoring points on his first appearance in 1999. Following frustrations with Jaguar, he then became a crucial part in any McLaren success which was seen between 2003 and 2009.

As the in-season testing ban came into play last year, it was obvious that de la Rosa would want to return to racing - due to the sheer lack of running time outside of race weekends; even when there was a test, race drivers were in the cockpit more as opportunities to experiment were now so rare.

Bringing such an experienced head into recovering and BMW-departed Sauber was a highly sensible move by Team Principal Peter although de la Rosa has been a victim of problem after problem so far…so many, in fact, that he literally hit the walls of his hotel room near the Circuit de Catalunya following another disastrous day which he had hoped could be a happy home Grand Prix. When he did finally score a point in Valencia, it was taken away by a time penalty.

Believe it or not, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The car is not likely to get much better, as serious work is now starting on the 2011 machine, but Kamui Kobayashi has now twice proven that scoring points is possible. Let’s hope Pedro, one of the friendliest people in the paddock, can manage to do the same; after all, as he’s already hinted, this may be his last season of F1 racing.
