GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Sébastien Buemi

5 July 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

Buemi impressed in the first half of his rookie season last year although 2010 has been a bit up and down so far. Undoubtedly, there have been great drives which could set him up nicely for a Red Bull Racing seat in future years, although the Swiss driver has also been critical of his team, not least in press releases.

Not dissimilar to former team-mate Bourdais, who ironically shared the same first name, Buemi has not been shy when it comes to pointing the finger at his team, whereas team-mate Jaime Alguersuari appears to be more of an all-rounder; although it’s natural for a driver to be angry and frustrated at times, Sébastien should not forget the many thrills and spills he caused last year.

You could certainly sense the pressure was getting to Buemi as Alguersuari became the first Toro Rosso points scorer of 2010 in Malaysia. However, following four retirements from the first five races, the former produced a mature drive to a point in Monte-Carlo and has in fact finished in the top ten in a third of the races so far.

Although he may have been disappointed with ninth in Valencia, which followed a brilliant drive to eighth by using his head and staying out of trouble in Montreal, Buemi is joint 13th in the Drivers’ Championship and hopes to see the squad formerly known as Minardi overhaul Williams for seventh in the Constructors’ fight…and should that happen, it’ll do the 21-year-old’s reputation no harm at all.
