GPUpdate Half-Term Report: Robert Kubica

6 July 2010

Halfway through Lap 26 of the British Grand Prix will mark the central point of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Before visiting a new-look Silverstone, GPUpdate.net reviews each driver’s performances, including highs and lows, from the first nine races of a highly dramatic championship.

Kubica’s general performance has been stunning in the first half of 2010; extremely strong results make the Pole, for many people, the best all-round player so far this season. After nine races, he's yet to register a DNF and sits ahead of both Mercedes factory cars and one Ferrari in the Drivers’ Championship.

Picture the situation. After scoring on his debut whilst replacing a former Champion in 2006 (despite being disqualified afterwards), Robert visited the podium in only his third race, was duly handed a full-time drive with BMW and could have challenged for the 2008 title should the Munich company not have decided to focus on 2009, which soon turned out to be a total disaster anyway.

Following BM’s exit, Kubica found sanctuary at Renault – the team which came close to imploding 12 months ago due to ‘Crashgate’. You only have to look at the stats to identify how much of a talent Kubica is; he’s never qualified outside the top ten this year, no matter who else was eliminated or what the conditions were, and would have scored in all races had it not been for a tap from Adrian Sutil at Bahrain’s second corner…and even then he still climbed back through the field to 11th.

Who would have believed that newly-owned Renault F1 would manage a couple of podium results just six races in, following the chaos of 2009? It’s thanks to rapid development, a hell of a lot of hard work at Enstone and Kubica’s natural abilities behind the wheel. If any underdog wins a race this year, surely Robert’s the man.

And yes, he may be secretly disappointed that Felipe Massa is staying at Ferrari, but why be worried if Renault keeps this form going?
