Renault retains Kubica until end of 2012

7 July 2010

Renault has confirmed that Robert Kubica will remain with the team until at least the end of the 2012 season. The contract renewal arrives follow rumours earlier in the season that the Pole could have switched to Ferrari although Felipe Massa has since been retained as Fernando Alonso’s team-mate.

After making a highly impressive Formula 1 debut with BMW mid-2006, Kubica clinched his first pole position and race win with the German manufacturer two years later before switching to Renault following a ruinous campaign last year.

With Renault F1 having been left in tatters follow the ‘Crashgate’ race-fixing scandal of 2009, the now Genii Capital-owned outfit has surprised all by being a comfortable top five contender in the Constructors’ World Championship, not least due to Kubica’s impressive podium finishes in Australia and Monaco.

“We are delighted that Robert will remain with us for the next two seasons and I would like to thank him for the faith he has shown in this team,” Team Principal Eric Boullier said on Wednesday afternoon.

“There have been many rumours surrounding his future in recent weeks, which were a tribute to how well he has driven this year, and we are very happy to have agreed a multi-year deal.

“Our clear goal is to become title contenders over the next two years. To do so, we need a driver of Robert’s calibre: somebody who is fast, totally committed and doesn’t make mistakes. His performances during the first half of the 2010 season were flawless and we hope to achieve great things together in the future.”
