McLaren are probably sandbagging, says Webber

9 July 2010

Mark Webber suspects that McLaren's pace in second Friday practice was not genuine at Silverstone on Friday. As the Australian topped the timesheets with a leading lap time of 1:31.235, Lewis Hamilton was McLaren's leader in eighth.

Red Bull were pleased to lead both sessions on Friday, with Sebastian Vettel on P1 in the morning before Webber moved ahead later in the day. However, both 90-minute periods featured a number of incidents, not least at the new Abbey Curve where cars continue to bottom out.

“Whoever designed it got the angle right because it's a very solid and fast corner,” Webber told reporters shortly after climbing from his car. “We knew it would be quick but it's very nice.”

However, Mark – who was forced to sit out in the last minutes due to a hydraulics problem – believes that McLaren's positions of eighth and 13th should not be viewed too seriously.

“They're probably sandbagging,” he smiled. “I'm expecting them to be back up to speed tomorrow."
