Hamilton: It will be a lot closer tomorrow

9 July 2010

Lewis Hamilton was generally pleased with McLaren's Silverstone performance on Friday, suggesting that the Woking team was running with high fuel levels in second practice. However, the 2008 Silverstone winner suffered a number of off-track moments at Silverstone.

With Red Bull and Mark Webber on top, Hamilton was the first McLaren in eighth, one and a half seconds off the pace.

“I definitely feel we've made a step forward,” he explained to reporters, with no car updates having been introduced in Valencia a fortnight ago.

“This track's a bit like Barcelona, where you can see there's about a second's gap between ourselves and Red Bull, but I don't think we'll be seeing that tomorrow – it'll be a lot closer.”

Running a blown diffuser for the first time, with part of the feature clearly visible at the rear of the McLarens due to their white colour, team-mate and fellow British Champion Jenson Button ended the day a further half second down in 13th.

“We've definitely made some improvements in certain places but we're not where we'd like to be,” he admitted. “We don't have the right balance yet and I haven't had the perfect day today, which is disappointing because – even though it's a Friday - it's good to see so many fans are out there.”
