Williams to keep blown diffuser on cars

9 July 2010

Williams has confirmed that its blown diffuser, which was debuted in Friday’s first two practice sessions at Silverstone, will remain on the cars of Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg. The Brazilian-German pairing finished the day in strong 10th and 12th positions at the modified English track.

With Silverstone being the first true high-speed circuit since Istanbul Park at the end of May, Williams – which scored 12 World Championship points with Barrichello at the last race in Valencia - adopted the blown diffuser on Friday; the component, pioneered by Red Bull Racing, improves rear end downforce courtesy of the channelling of hot exhaust gases.

“We’ve had a good day evaluating setup and tyres, as well as testing the new parts that we’ve brought here,” team Technical Director Sam Michael explained.

“The upgrades all worked as expected, including the exhaust blown diffuser, so we will be keeping that on both cars for the rest of the weekend. Nico’s car had a gearbox oil leak between sessions, which cost him some time at the start of the second practice session.”
