Button struggles with 'undriveable' McLaren

10 July 2010

Reigning Champion Jenson Button could achieve no more than a highly disappointing 14th position on Saturday in a shorter than expected British Grand Prix qualifying session at Silverstone. Having had his exhaust-blown diffuser removed overnight, the Frome man starts ten places behind fellow countryman and team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

With McLaren having planned to run their new diffusers for the duration of the weekend, problems on Friday meant that the Woking squad took the decision against using the parts on Saturday. However, Button complained of a significant lack of rear end grip in qualifying.

“The car was undriveable,” he told reporters in the paddock. “It was good this morning but something is now wrong with the car, absolutely undriveable.”

“It was was already difficult this morning, we had to go back to the old package,” he added when speaking to the BBC. “We were happy at the end of practice but in qualifying it was a different animal, no pace at all, I really struggled. Hopefully we'll find the problem because it's going to be difficult if we don't."
