Liuzzi handed 5-place drop for blocking Hülkenberg

10 July 2010

Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi had been handed a 5-place grid penalty for blocking Nico Hülkenberg for an entire lap in Silverstone qualifying on Saturday.

Having been just four thousandths off Williams team-mate Rubens Barrichello in Montreal before matching his team-mate's best qualifying time in Valencia, Hülkenberg had hoped to move ahead at familiar Silverstone although the German was unable to do so.

“Traffic really destroyed qualifying for me today,” he said. “As I was going into the first corner on a quick lap in Q2, Liuzzi exited the pit lane under blue flags but didn't move out of my way. That ruined my lap from the outset as I couldn't get past him.”

As a result of the penalty, which has been decided by FIA Race Stewards including 1992 Champion Nigel Mansell, Liuzzi plummets from 15th to 20th on Sunday's starting grid.

Further reaction: I thought I had to keep Nico behind, says Liuzzi
