Ecclestone eyes up 2013 return to South Africa

11 July 2010

Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his hopes to return to South Africa, which has not been part of the Formula 1 calendar since 1993. The sporting commercial rights holder is particularly impressed with the country of late, which has hosted a thrilling football World Cup which will meet its conclusion this evening.

With India making a maiden F1 appearance next year, Russia is Ecclestone's next big priority although the Englishman is also considering South Africa, whose Kyalami circuit first hosted a race in 1967 before Alain Prost was the final man to cross the finish line as a winner 25 years later.

Should 2013 welcome a reappearance, the race will make a comeback exactly two decades after leaving the circus.

“It would be nice to have covered the world but Russia is more important right now,” Ecclestone told BBC Radio 5 live, with F1 hoping to eventually travel to all continents.

“Africa is limited for all the people who are involved in F1 for business, whereas Russia is wide open, but we'll see.

“We've been talking to the people in South Africa for quite a long time, off and on; the chances are okay - it's a case of getting the right venue, always. We've been talking to the people in Cape Town. There are one or two places that could happen and are coming on quite strong. We're talking about building a circuit - it's probably about three years away, that's what I would like to see.”
