FIA tweaks Safety Car regulations

11 July 2010

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has confirmed that regulations surrounding the deployment of the Safety Car have been modified ahead of this afternoon's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The changes come following the confusion of Valencia a fortnight ago, when Lewis Hamilton overtook the silver Mercedes vehicle and another nine drivers were penalised for driving too quickly under a caution period.

From now on, the Safety Car – when called for – will not exit the pit lane until Race Director Charlie Whiting confirms it may do so. Once leaving, it will pick up the race leader 'in order to try and ensure that no drivers will be unnecessarily disadvantaged,' an FIA statement reads.

'In all cases we will attempt to pick up the leader however, if this proves unfeasible for any reason, cars between the Safety Car and the leader will be waved through immediately.'
