Fernando Alonso failed to score in the British Grand Prix, meaning he now lies 47 points – almost the equivalent of two race wins – off championship leader Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari driver, who started fourth at Silverstone on Sunday, has explained that clutch issues contributed to a poor getaway but remains negative of FIA Race Stewards' choices.
After pulling away from third on the grid, Alonso was squeezed out wide at Copse, contacted twice with team-mate Felipe Massa at Becketts and found himself running fifth at the end of Lap 1.
“I made a horrible start – we had some problems with the clutch – and then came the incident with Kubica, which further affected my race,” explained Fernando, who was handed a drive-through penalty for cutting the apex of Club corner, only to wait before coming in and than see the deployment of the Safety Car, meaning he had to pit as the race restarted.
“I do not wish to comment on the stewards' decision. The team acted correctly but the instruction to hand back the position arrived when I had already passed another driver and, in the meantime, Kubica was visibly slowing down and retiring.”
