British Grand Prix winner Mark Webber has labelled his Silverstone victory as 'even sweeter' when taking into consideration that he was using an older front wing than team-mate Sebastian Vettel. The Australian has also now moved back ahead of the German in the championship and to within 17 points of leader Lewis Hamilton.
The front wing story dates back to the third and final practice session, which preceded qualifying on Saturday morning, in which Vettel – carrying one of the squad's two latest wings – suffered a failure and had to return to the pit lane.
Prior to qualifying, Webber's version of the latest component was swapped to Vettel's car, leaving Mark with an older specification as Sebastian duly took pole by a tenth of a second.
“Whether the gap between us in qualifying was the difference between the two front wings, I don’t know,” Webber said on his personal website, “but it was a far from ideal situation and it definitely made my win taste even sweeter.”
With his parents having been present at the Northamptonshire circuit, Webber then drove the 45-minute journey to Aylesbury in order to celebrate the success with more family and friends.
“This was the first European race of the season that mum and dad have attended,” he continued. “It meant a lot to have them there and it was an emotional moment when I saw them standing below me on the podium, while Advance Australia Fair was playing out.”
