Petrov’s future is in his hands, say Renault

14 July 2010

The destiny of Vitaly Petrov as a Grand Prix driver will be controlled by no-one but himself, according to Renault Team Principal Eric Boullier. The Russian, who stepped up from GP2 at the beginning of the year, has scored six points from his first ten F1 races.

Having already established a reputation as a rapid starter and tough defender, Petrov has also endured several crashes this season although all came good for the Vyborg man as he finished seventh in China. However, more of the same is likely to be required from Hockenheim onwards, as Boullier has explained.

“His future is in his own hands,” the Frenchman said in the team’s post-British Grand Prix podcast.

“We are not disappointed with him. He clearly is the best of the rookies in the paddock; he’s performed really well at times but he needs some more consistency to get the points he deserves.”

With hearsay in the pit lane stating that 2007 Champion Kimi Räikkönen could make a Formula 1 return and run alongside Robert Kubica, Boullier believes that Petrov’s disappointing string of recent results are likely to have fuelled speculation.

“We definitely need both cars scoring points but we are fully committed to him,” he said of Petrov. “We are happy to have him on-board and we will help him to extract every last bit of performance.”
