Renault contemplating f-duct introduction

15 July 2010

Although they debuted an exhaust-blown diffuser in Valencia, Renault is the last of the top teams to develop an f-duct system this year. However, the Enstone squad is set to be making use of the rear wing-stalling device within the space of a month.

Also known as Switchable Rear Wing (SRW), an f-duct allows drivers to control the amount of airflow to their car’s rear wing in a bid to increase top speeds on straights and, although such a system will be outlawed in 2011, Renault Team Principal Eric Boullier is confident that it will be making an appearance soon.

“We have some good developments coming for the next three or four races,” he said in the team’s post-British Grand Prix podcast.

“Besides the circuit-specific aerodynamic packages, we'll have some new components, including a two-step f-duct.”

However, a final date for its maiden outing is yet to be established. “It depends on the production and the race schedule,” the Frenchman continued. “Budapest is a high-downforce track, so we don't need to have it for Budapest. Maybe we'll get it before, or very likely right after.”
